If your dog loves to splash and swim, dock diving could be the sport for him.
What is dock diving?
Dock diving is an exciting dog sport in which dogs compete in jumping for the longest distance or greatest height from a dock into a body of water. The sport started in the late 1990s and has become increasingly popular in the US. It is easy to learn and teach.
The dog starts on a dock with a pool or other body of water in front of him. The dog’s guardian or handler tosses a favorite toy into the water and the dog is released to run across the dock and leap into the water for the toy. There are several variations of the sport. One form determines the winner by the distance of the jump alone, while another requires the dog to catch the toy being thrown into the water.
Is this sport right for my dog?
Dock diving is a fantastic dog sport choice for healthy water-loving dogs or those with minor joint issues, as swimming in water puts limited strain on the joints. If your dog has major issues, then jumping into the water could put more stress on his joints.
The sport requires minimal training, and many dogs pick up the retrieval concept quickly.
Dogs of any breed or breed mix are eligible to participate or compete in dock diving. While the sport traditionally featured Labrador Retrievers and other hunting breeds, dogs of all shapes and sizes compete successfully.
