When a trigger gets too close for your dog's comfort, the Emergency U-Turn life skill sure comes in handy.
There are times when you're out walking with your dog and suddenly you realize that continuing on that same path could become risky. You sense potential trouble up ahead--perhaps unfamiliar sights, sounds, people, or dogs--that might cause your dog harm or provoke him to react poorly. This is the moment to use the "Emergency U-Turn."
This cue allows you to quickly and calmly redirect your dog, so you both turn in the opposite direction all while maintaining a comfortable loose leash connection.

How to Teach Your Dog the Emergency U-Turn Cue
- You’ll need small food treats on hand that appeal to your dog.
- Begin by walking your dog a short distance and then giving her a treat.
- Continue walking, but add the verbal cue of "turning" and physically turn your body. Reward your dog for making the turn with you. This is called “marking” the desired behavior.
- As a next step, continue practicing the combination of verbal and physical cues, with rewards, in a comfortable setting.
- As your dog becomes more proficient, practice the cue in situations when there is a distraction in the environment.
